Smith Nets Two in Western New England’s 3-0 Shutout Win Over Husson

Golden Bears take season-high 22 shots, putting 13 on goal

BANGOR, Maine (September 9, 2018) – The Western New England University women's soccer team turned in an impressive offensive showing in the Golden Bears' 3-0 shutout victory over Husson University on Sunday afternoon in the final game of the Courtyard by Marriott Classic at Boucher Field.

Top Performers
Sophomore forward Morgan Smith (Manchester, Conn.) scored a pair of goals to fuel the Western New England attack, while classmate Mariana Goncalves (Ludlow, Mass.) also found the back of the net for the Golden Bears. Smith and Goncalves both put a team-high three shots on target.

Sophomore Bee Murphy (Monson, Mass.) and freshmen Autumn Hathaway (Colchester, Vt.) and Allison Bruehwiler (Old Saybrook, Conn.) were credited with assists.

Freshman goalkeeper Shannon Murphy (Halifax, Mass.) registered her first career shutout with a two-save effort.

Game Review
Hathaway set Smith up for the game's opening goal 22:34 into the contest. Western New England continued to use an aggressive offensive approach, and the Golden Bears were able to double their lead with just over two minutes remaining before halftime when Smith buried her second goal of the game on a feed from Murphy.

Goncalves scored her first collegiate goal with the help of an assist from Bruehwiler early in the second half, and Western New England cruised the rest of the way to the shutout win.

• Western New England fired a season-high 22 shots, including 13 on goal. The Golden Bears limited Husson to just two shots on target and three attempts overall.
• Smith, Goncalves and senior captain Erin Grimes (Attleboro, Mass.) were named to the Courtyard by Marriott Classic All-Tournament Team.

Western New England (2-2) will be on the road Tuesday at Mount Holyoke College, before returning home on Saturday to open Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play against Endicott.
