Golden Bears Fall to Eastern Connecticut in Non-Conference Finale, 1-0

Western New England has four-match winning streak snapped

MANSFIELD, Conn. (October 17, 2018) – The Western New England University women's soccer team was defeated by Eastern Connecticut State University 1-0 on Wednesday evening in non-conference action at the Mansfield Outdoor Complex.

Top Performers
Eastern senior midfielder Hannah Goodale (Coventry, Conn.) scored the lone goal of the contest early in the second half with assists from senior Anna Manser (Manchester, Conn.) and junior Stephanie Sanchez (Manchester, Conn.).

Western New England's only shot on goal came courtesy of junior defender Amanda Gagnon (Newington, Conn.), who had a pair of solid scoring chances in the contest.

Game Review
After a scoreless first half in which neither team threatened to score, the Warriors broke through six minutes into the second period when Goodale found the back of the net.

Western New England's first chance at equalizing came in the 64th minute, when Gagnon's low drive from the right side was smothered by Videira.

The Golden Bears had another opportunity to pull even with 6:40 remaining in the contest, but Gagnon's attempt sailed wide.

• Eastern Connecticut outshot Western New England 12-8, and the Warriors held a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
• Both teams utilized two goalkeepers as junior Alex Lemekha (Stamford, Conn.) got the start for the Golden Bears and made three first half saves, before senior Marissa Veilleux (Newington, Conn.) took over for the second half and stopped one shot. For Eastern, sophomore Rachel Videira (Oxford, Conn.) earned the win after making one save over the final 45 minutes of play.
• Following their win, the Warriors are 8-0 at home this season.

Both teams will be back in action on Saturday, as Western New England (8-7-1) returns home to take on the University of New England and Eastern Connecticut (9-5) hosts Southern Maine.
