Women’s Soccer Ranked Fourth in CCC Preseason Coaches’ Poll

Golden Bears' season begins next Saturday (8/31) vs. Keene State

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (August 21, 2019) – The Western New England University women's soccer team tied for fourth place in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Preseason Coaches' Poll, as announced by the league office on Wednesday afternoon.

The Golden Bears received 53 points in the poll, which is voted on by all nine head coaches in the CCC. Endicott College was selected as the preseason favorite with 75 points and five first-place votes, while defending CCC champion University of New England took the runner-up spot with 69 points and three first-place nods. Gordon College followed in third place with 61 points, and Roger Williams received the final first-place vote, tying Western New England with 53 points. The last four positions in the poll went to Salve Regina (34 points), Wentworth (25), Curry (24) and Nichols (11).

With fourth-year head coach Kristin Hensinger '07 leading the way, Western New England has established itself as one of the top programs in the CCC. The 2017 Golden Bears reached the CCC Tournament semifinals for the first time since 2011, and last fall, Western New England made its second-ever appearance in the CCC title contest.

Three All-CCC performers from last season's squad return in 2019, including senior goalkeeper Alex Lemekha (Stamford, Conn), who has posted a 1.00 goals against average with ten shutouts over the past two seasons.

Sophomore Allison Bruehwiler (Old Saybrook, Conn.) will look to follow up an impressive freshman campaign in which she tied for the team-lead with 15 points (6 goals, 3 assists) on her way to CCC Rookie of the Year accolades. Junior Morgan Smith (Manchester, Conn.) will also play a key role offensively after compiling 25 points (11 goals, 3 assists) over her first two collegiate seasons.

Western New England opens its season at home against Keene State College on Saturday, August 31st. The Golden Bears' non-conference slate also features matchups against Springfield College (9/4), Western Connecticut (9/14) and UMass Boston (9/19), before the CCC portion of the schedule begins against Wentworth on Saturday, September 28th.
