SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (September 21, 2019) – A hat trick by sophomore forward Victoria Patriarca (Burrillville, R.I.) led the Johnson & Wales University women's soccer team to a 5-1 win over Western New England University on Saturday afternoon at Suprenant Field.
Patriarca powered the JWU offense, while freshman midfielder Alexis Vieira (Warwick, R.I.) chipped in with a goal and an assist. Wildcats senior goalkeeper Colleen Lynch (New Milford, Conn.) finished with four saves.
Western New England's lone goal was scored by junior forward Morgan Smith (Manchester, Conn.), her first of the season.
Patriarca placed a high shot over Western New England senior goalkeeper Alex Lemekha (Stamford, Conn.) for the game's opening goal in the ninth minute.
The Golden Bears equalized on Smith's unassisted strike at the 32:48 mark, but JWU answered less than two minutes later, as Vieira lifted a shot over Lemekha's outstretched hands from just outside the box to make it 2-1 in favor of the visitors.
The Wildcats added to their lead before the break, as Patriarca scored her second of the contest after being played into the box by Vieira.
Patriarca completed her hat trick with an attempt that found the upper left corner of the net in the 52nd minute, before JWU junior midfielder Olivia Cairrao (Bristol, R.I.) capped the scoring with 30:46 to play.
