Michelle Toner was named head coach of the Western New England University women's swimming program on August 14, 2019.
Toner comes to Western New England after spending the 2018-19 season as an assistant coach at Mount Holyoke College.
With the Lyons, she coached technique, assisted in directing workouts, directed dry land warm-ups, and collaborated with head coach Dave Allen on philosophy for individual meet assignments, training sessions, and team goals.
Toner has earned several certifications from the American Swim Coaches Association (ASCA), including Level 5-Education, Level 3-Masters, and Level 2-USA Swimming.
In addition to her role at Mount Holyoke, Toner served as head coach of the Holyoke YMCA Masters Swimming program from August 2015-January 2019. She coached both on and off deck, delivering workouts and stroke refinement for athletes of varying abilities. Toner also served as meet manager, which includes advertising, securing officials and volunteers, designing the meet format and ensuring compliance with USMS meet standards. She was responsible for recruiting new team members, resulting in increased membership.
Over the past two summers, Toner has held an assistant coaching position with the Holyoke YMCA Vikings, a USA Swimming Level 3 Club. She also spent time as a volunteer assistant coach at Belchertown High School during the 2017-18 campaign.
A 2003 graduate of Salem State University, Toner earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Cartography and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). She went on to receive her Master of Professional Studies degree in Informatics with a GIS concentration from Northeastern University in 2008.
Toner (née Novak) takes over as Western New England's head women's swimming coach following the departure of Andrea Daley, who led the program for 17 seasons from 2002-19.
