Western New England College senior Meredith Hughes voted TCCC Player-of-the-Week

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Western New England College women's tennis team is enjoying another successful season and a big contributor has been senior co-captain Meredith Hughes (Springfield, MA).

Hughes was named The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) Player-of-the-Week on Monday (Oct. 15) after posting three straight-set victories at the No. 1 singles position. She also captured two of three No. 1 doubles matches.

A Psychology/Elementary Education major, Hughes finished the regular season with an 11-1 record at the top singles spot and was leading two other matches that went unfinished because of darkness. She also teamed with sophomore Kristen Ayers (3-0) and junior Ashley Sunderland (6-5) for a 9-5 mark at the top doubles flight.

Hughes ranks among the program's top players with an overall 71-22 record (76.3%), which includes a 41-10 mark (80.4) in singles competition. She has played the top doubles position all four years and top singles spot the past three seasons.

Western New England College finished the regular season with a 10-4 record and placed fourth in the conference with a 7-3 mark. The Golden Bears will host fifth-seeded Salve Regina at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday (Oct. 16) in a quarterfinal round match of TCCC Tournament. WNEC defeated the Seahawks 8-1 back on September 13 in Newport, Rhode Island.
