Meredith Hughes of Western New England College receives two major TCCC awards

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) named Meredith Hughes (Springfield, MA) of Western New England College as both its Women’s Tennis Player-of-the-Year and Senior Scholar-Athlete-of-the-Year on Tuesday (Oct. 16).

Hughes, a team co-captain, becomes the first WNEC student-athlete to receive a TCCC award as the Golden Bears’ are competing in the conference for the first time this fall. She posted an overall 11-1 record at the No. 1 singles position, which included an 8-1 mark in conference action.

Playing the top doubles position with two partners, Hughes compiled a 9-5 record while winning seven of 10 conference matches.

In the classroom, she has a 3.51 cumulative grade-point-average in Psychology/Education and is a member of the Chi Alpha Sigma National College Athlete Honor Society.

Hughes also was selected to the All-TCCC Singles First Team and teamed with junior Ashley Sunderland (Commack, NY) to make the Doubles Second Team. They were 6-5 (4-3 conference) at the No. 1 double flight.

Sophomore Kristen Ayers (Acton, MA) earned an honorable mention on the All-TCCC Singles Team after compiling an 8-3 record (5-3 conference) at the No. 2 singles position.

Western New England College, under coach Jennifer Kolins, posted a 10-4 record during the regular season and finished fourth in TCCC with a 7-3 mark.

The Golden Bears host Salve Regina (7-4, 7-3 conference) at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday (Oct. 16) in a quarterfinal round match of TCCC Tournament.
