Volleyball Splits with Marywood and St. Lawrence

Sibiskie tallies 49 assists in return to action

CORTLAND, N.Y. (August 30, 2019) – The Western New England University volleyball team opened its 2019 campaign at the SUNY Cortland Red Dragon Classic on Friday evening, splitting a pair of matches with Marywood (Pa.) University and St. Lawrence University at Whitney T. Corey Gymnasium.

Western New England 3, Marywood 0 (26-24, 25-17, 25-21)

Senior middle blocker Cassandra Holmes (Ellington, Conn.) paced the Golden Bears in the first match of the evening with a team-high ten kills to go with four service aces.

In her first match back since missing the 2018 campaign with an injury, senior setter Caitlyn Sibiskie (Rockfall, Conn.) directed the offense with 26 assists.

Senior outside hitter Ashley Matthews (Salem, N.H.) produced six kills and seven digs, while junior outside hitter Hailey McDonnell (Methuen, Mass.) chipped in with eight kills.

Defensively, sophomore Taylor Deluga (Dennis, Mass.) finished with a team-best ten digs.  

St. Lawrence 3, Western New England 0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-21)

Sibiskie turned in another strong performance in the second match of the night, registering a double-double with 23 assists and 11 digs.

Matthews totaled ten kills and nine digs, while freshman defensive specialist Emily Musso (Wallingford, Conn.) collected a team-high 17 digs in her collegiate debut.

Western New England will be right back in action tomorrow with two more matches at the SUNY Cortland Red Dragon Classic. The Golden Bears are slated to take on Rochester (N.Y.) at 10 a.m. before playing their final contest of the tournament against Lebanon Valley (Pa.) at 3 p.m.
