Wrestling Wins on Senior Night, 28-24 over WPI

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (February 11, 2022) – The Western New England men's wrestling team honored their three seniors prior to the first match of tonight's match, honoring Nick Arborio, Darius Grant, and Mitchell Pardi before taking down the WPI Engineers by a final score of 28-24. 

How it Happened:

Western New England would open with the first 11 points of the match after Nick Arborio and Corey Cope were able to come away with victories for the Golden Bears. Arborio defeated Tanner Thatacher of WPI via fall to give WNE a 6-0 lead in the 125 lb. weight class. Cope would come away with a tech-fall victory by a final score of 18-0 over Antonios Sevastos to put the next five points on the board for the Golden Bears to take an early 11-0 lead over the visitors. 

WPI would come through with their first three points of the match when Chris Cook took the win in the 141 lb. weight class over Colby Reilly on a 9-5 decision in three rounds. Cam Hines would add six points to the Golden Bears total off a fall victory over Issac Krieger of WPI to give Western New England a 17-3 lead. Hines would take the 149 lb. weight class win.

In the 157 lb. weight class Lucas Pinzino would take the victory via fall over Caleb Prouty to give Western New England a big 23-3 lead. WPI would come around with three straight victories as Ryan Powers would win the 165 lb. weight class over Sean Monteiro via fall to pick up six points for the Engineers. Adam Marsh would win the 174 lb. weight class over Western New England's CJ Glaropoulos to give WPI an additional six points, putting them down by eight points, at 23-15. In the 184 lb. weight class, Nicolas LeSieur would take the victory over Western New England's Tyreece Cherival via fall to add an extra six points to WPI's total. The Engineers would storm back for 18 straight points before Western New England was able to get on the board again. 

Darby McLaughlin would take down Alexi Echevarria via tech-fall in the 197 lb. match with a final score of 18-3 to give Western New England a huge five points in the results column. WPI would take the 285 lb. weight class as Chris Gens took down Griffin Ostrom in an 8-1 decision to pick up an extra three points for the Engineers, though it would not be enough as the Golden Bears took down WPI by a final score of 28-24, winning their 8thmeet of the season.
