Golden Bears Triumphant at Western New England Duals, Defeat NEC and No. 13 ESU

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (November 9, 2024) – The Golden Bears' women's wrestling program hosted the Western New England Duals on Saturday. They hosted New England College (NEC) and number 13-ranked East Stroudsburg University (ESU). WNE would take down both opponents, going 2-0 on the day.

How it Happened (vs. NEC): 
 The Golden Bears started their contest with NEC with two wins by forfeit. Claudia King and Gianna Hernandez earned those wins in the 103 lb. and 110 lb. weight classes, respectively. NEC's Madeline Li would earn a win by pinfall at 1:03 in the 117 lb. weight class. However, WNE would win the final seven matches. Ariel Casella won the 124 lb. weight class match over Olivia Delegas by pinfall at 0:48. Then, Abigail Alicandro defeated Orla King by technical fall at 0:36 in the 131 lb. weight class match. Tanya Teneva and Kendall Branchaud then earned wins by forfeit in the 138 lb. and 145 lb. weight class matches, respectively. Atiyana Williams won the next match over Karime Carmarena-Tejeda by technical fall at 1:09 in the 160 lb. weight class match. WNE ended the contest by earning two wins by forfeit. Mikayla Maloy earned the win in the 180 lb. weight class and Samantha Rabkin won in the 207 lb. weight class. The Golden Bears won the contest against NEC 43-5.

How it Happened (vs. ESU): 
The ESU contest began with Claudia King picking up the win by forfeit in the 103 lb. weight class. ESU bounced back with two wins in a row. Emily Klein won the 110 lb. weight class match by technical fall at 2:48 and Alanna Barberio won the 117 lb. weight class match by pinfall at 2:37. WNE responded by winning two matches in a row, also. Linda Holeman defeated Waverly Kanelong via decision, 8-7, in the 124 lb. weight class. Abigail Alicandro picked up the win over Gabrielle Baker by pinfall at 2:12 in the 131 lb. weight class. ESU would not shy away and would pick up two more wins after that. Zoe Gress won the 138 lb. weight class match via pinfall at 3:58 and Selina Moore won the 145 lb. weight class match via pinfall at 1:24. That would be the final win of the contest for ESU, though. WNE would win the final three matches and win the contest. Atiyanna Williams earned a victory in the 160 lb. weight class over Jade Huerta by pinfall at 1:23. Then, Shalom Feliz Lopez would win via pinfall also. Feliz Lopez won the 180 lb. weight class match by pinfall at 1:50 over Dynisty Williams. Samantha Rabkin won the 207 lb. weight class match via decision, 2-1, over Brooklynn Ayala to help secure WNE's second top-20 ranked win in program history. WNE beat number 13-ranked ESU 26-21.
