Golden Bears Drop Both Opening Day Games at "The Spring Games" Tournament

Clermont, FL (March 16, 2024) – The Golden Bears opened their season with their first two games of "The Spring Games" tournament down in Clermont, Florida. WNE opened with a game against the University of Southern Maine. USM would win the game 3-0 thanks to Belle Snyder only letting up two hits on the mound, and a home run in the first inning from Abby Miner. The Golden Bears fell in game two to Wisconsin-Eau Claire. The Golden Bears would grab their first two runs of the season, but Lauren Trottier would hold on to earn the save for the BluGolds. The Golden Bears lost 3-2.

Game 1: Southern Maine 3, Western New England 0

The Golden Bears and Huskies faced off in WNE's first game of "The Spring Games" tournament. The Huskies would get on the board first, thanks to Abby Miner hitting a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning. USM had the lead 1-0 after the first inning. The Huskies and Belle Snyder kept the Golden Bear offense quiet. Snyder kept a perfect game going through the majority of the game. Neither team would score during innings two or three. The fourth inning saw the Golden Bears go three up, three down. Then, the Huskies doubled their lead. With runners on first and third and one out in the bottom of the fourth inning, Alana DeLisle sent a hit up the middle into centerfield. That brought Mackenzie Renner home, and the Huskies led 2-0. USM would get the bases loaded after that with two outs. However, Ava Blanchard would strike out the final batter to keep the WNE deficit at two runs. Neither team would get a hit in the fifth inning.

Then, in the sixth inning, Snyder kept the Golden Bears hitless and got more help from the USM offense. Makena Mulcahy would hit into a fielder's choice, which brought Hannah Shields through home plate. The Huskies now led 3-0. The Golden Bears got up in the top of the seventh and were down to their final out, with Snyder on the brink of a perfect game. Madison Mason would hit a double to right-center field. Angie Carrasquillo would pinch run and get to third on a hit from Kailey Carrano. The Golden Bears were not able to get another hit, though, and the Huskies would hold on for a 3-0 win.

Around the Diamond:

  • WNE was led by Madison Mason and Kailey Carrano, going 1-3. Mason had a double, and Carrano had a single.
  • The Huskies were led by Makena Mulcahy, who went 2-4, and Kendall Migliorini, who went 2-3.
  • Abby Miner hit a solo home run for USM.

  • The Huskies beat the Golden Bears 3-0.

Game 2: Wisconsin-Eau Claire 3, Western New England 2

The BluGolds and Golden Bears took the diamond for both teams' second game of the day. Riley Kane was in the circle for the Golden Bears and would start strong by getting all three of the BluGold batters to ground out in the first inning. The Golden Bears got a runner on via a Madison Mason walk but were unable to drive Mason home. Kane and the BluGold pitcher Jocelyn Hancock took down the opposing orders one, two, three in the second. The top of the third saw the BluGolds open up the scoring with a steal by Morgan Netzinger, who stole third, and then an error on the throw-down allowed Netzinger to score. The BluGolds led 1-0. The Golden Bears had a chance with runners on second and third and two outs but could not drive the runners home in the third after Jacie Schultz replaced Hancock in the pitcher's circle.

With one out in the top of the fourth, a wild pitch would see Paige Lathrop score. The BluGolds had a 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the fourth, the Golden Bears earned their first run of the season. With one out and Angie Carrasqui on third, Alex Ferriouolo launched a double into right-center field. Carrasqui scored, and the score was 2-1, BluGolds. That is how the score would stay through the fifth inning, as Kane and Schultz got through the opposing hitters in the inning. The BluGolds struck again in the top of the sixth as Claire Beck slapped a single through the middle of the infield. Kenna Strunsee ran home, and the BluGolds led 3-1. The Golden Bears threatened by having two walks to start the bottom of the sixth. However, Lauren Trottier would enter at pitcher and get three outs in a row with two strikeouts to keep the BluGold lead at 3-1. The seventh saw Shelby Parr enter the game and pitch for the first time as a Golden Bear. Parr saw three batters and got three batters out. In the bottom of the seventh, the Golden Bears had bases loaded and one out. After a second out, Gracie Hemstock would get hit, which drove in a run. The score was 3-2.
