SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 16, 2024) – The Western New England softball team came away with a 5-2 victory on Tuesday afternoon from Golden Bear Softball Park, taking down the Pride of Springfield College in a one-game series. WNE would get excellent pitching from
Evelyn Picone,
Ava Blanchard, and
Emilia Garcia to come away with the win.
Records:
- Western New England: 15–9
- Springfield College: 19-5-1
How it Happened:
The Golden Bears came away with the first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning when
Madison Mason delivered an RBI double down the left field line after
Kailey Carrano and
Lizzie Weston would come around with hits with two outs in the inning.
Mason's double would give the Golden Bears a 1-0 lead. Springfield College came around with their first run of the game when Lucy Puskas picked up a single to left field and an RBI on the play to even the score. Puskas's hit would come with one out in the inning. The Golden Bears would get an out at the plate on a ground ball, fielder's choice, while WNE starting pitcher
Evelyn Picone would get a ground ball by Amelia DeRosa to second base to keep Springfield off the scoreboard.
The Golden Bears would add a run in the bottom of the second inning to take their lead back after Western New England would take advantage of an error from the Pride.
Riley Kane would push a one-out single through the left side of the infield, while
Shea McDaniel would come around with a single to right field, and the Golden Bears would see a throwing error on the Pride's second baseman, which scored
Marley Rodriguez, who reached on a fielder's choice in the previous at-bat. Western New England would take a 2-1 lead into the third inning.
Picone would work the first three innings for the Golden Bears, giving up four hits and one earned one while recording one strikeout, getting a quick three outs in the top of the third inning to end her afternoon. The Golden Bears would continue to add runs, coming away with another run in the bottom of the third to take a 3-1 lead on Springfield.
Kailey Carrano would grab a one-out double to right center field, while
Lizzie Weston would hit a shot to third base. The Pride third baseman would not be able to handle the grounder from
Weston, as the ball would deflect away and out of play, allowing Western New England to score another run in the inning. In the top of the fourth,
Ava Blanchard would come in relief and shut down Springfield College in order in the top of the fourth.
The Golden Bears would add two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning when another error from the Pride would cost Springfield a run on another at-bat from
Weston. After
Gracie Hemstock and
Kailey Carrano would both reach safely,
Weston would fly out to right field, though tagging on the play was pinch runner
Alyssa Poisson, who forced a throw from right field to third base. The throw would be wildly off target, allowing runners to advance another base, scoring a run for the Golden Bears.
Madison Mason would collect her second RBI of the game, grabbing a single to left field, giving Western New England a 5-1 lead.
Springfield College would come away with one run in the top of the sixth to keep the game close after Emilia Santiago would hit the ball hard for a two-out double to right center field, putting the Pride on the board for the first time since the top of the second inning. Western New England would not be able to score in the bottom of the sixth inning, leaving the ball in the hands of
Emilia Garcia to record her first save of the season.
Garcia would do just that, allowing just one hit in the inning and getting Michaela Ponticello to strike out to end the game, giving Western New England a 5-2 victory over Springfield College.
