RWU’s Raegen Germano Blanks WNE, Forces Winner Take All Game on Sunday

Beverly, Mass. (May 11, 2024) – The Golden Bears were back in action on Saturday, May 11, 2024, at 3:00 PM in Beverly, Massachusetts, with a chance to win the CCC Championship. However, Raegen Germano would pitch a complete game shutout against WNE, and Ava Mendence hit an RBI single to help Roger Williams University force a winner-take-all game on Sunday, May 12, 2024, by winning 1-0.

Game 1: Roger Williams University 1, Western New England 0

Evelyn Picone started the game at pitcher for the Golden Bears. Picone would sit down the first three Hawk batters one, two, three. Raegen Germano was the pitcher for the Hawks. Germano answered by striking out all three WNE batters in the first inning. The Hawks would get two runners on in the second with two outs, but Picone struck out the final batter to keep the game tied at zero. Germano walked the first WNE batter but would strike out two of the following three to end the inning. Picone would see three batters and sit all three down in the top of the third. The Golden Bear offense would get another batter on via a walk. However, they could not get the runner home. In the fourth inning, the Golden Bears turned a double play to get out of the inning. That was followed by Germano sitting the Golden Bears down one, two, three once again. The top of the fifth saw the leadoff batter get on base with a single for the Hawks. However, Picone dealt with the rest of the batters to get out of the inning. Germano walked the leadoff batter for the Golden Bears. However, Germano dealt with the next three batters, and the fifth inning was over. The sixth saw Riley Kane enter the game for Evelyn Picone with one runner on and one out. Kane got the next Hawk batter to hit into a double play, and the Golden Bears were out of the inning. Germano continued the no-hitter by sitting down the Golden Bears one, two, three, and striking out one batter. The game was tied at zero going into the seventh. In the top of the seventh, with runners on first and third and one out, Ava Mendence singled up the middle of the infield. That brought Taylor Howell home, and the Hawks had the 1-0 lead. Kane got the next two batters out, striking out the final batter of the inning to move the game to the bottom of the seventh. Madison Mason started the inning by breaking up the no-hitter with a double. Angie Carrasquillo pinch-ran and got to third on a sacrifice bunt by Alex Ferriouolo. However, Germano would get the next two batters out, and the Hawks won the game 1-0.

Around the Diamond:

  • Madison Mason had the only hit for the Golden Bears. It was a double.
  • Taylor Howell led the Hawks at the plate by going two-for-two with a walk.
  • Taylor Howell also had the only extra-base hit for the Hawks. It was a double. 
  • Ava Mendence had the lone RBI for the Hawks in the top of the seventh inning.
  • Evelyn Picone pitched 5.1 innings for the Golden Bears, giving up three hits, no earned runs, and struck out four batters. Riley Kane pitched 1.2 innings, letting up two hits and one earned run, and struck out two batters.
  • Raegen Germano pitched seven innings, letting up one hit and no earned runs, and struck out nine batters to earn the win for the Hawks.
  • The Hawks defeated the Golden Bears 1-0.
