Warriors Take Game Two in Seventh Inning, WNE Split the Nonconference Doubleheader 1-1

Willimantic, Conn. (May 2, 2024) – The Golden Bears split a nonconference doubleheader against Eastern Connecticut State University in Willimantic, Connecticut, today. Game one saw the Golden Bears put up two runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings to win 6-5. WNE was led by Madison Mason's 2-for-3 performance, Kailey Carrano's fifth inning two-run home run, and Ava Blanchard's seven inning, four strikeout performance. Game two saw the Golden Bears get on the board with two runs first. However, the Warriors would come back and win it in the bottom of the seventh. Maggie Rubeck led the Warriors by going 2-for-3 with two RBIs from the plate. ECSU won game two, 3-2.

Game 1: Western New England 6, Eastern Connecticut State 5

Game one got started with Taylor Keegan making it to third without an out recorded. However, Maggie Rubeck struck out three of the next four batters to keep the Golden Bears scoreless. Ava Blanchard let one runner get on base but got the other three batters out and recorded a strikeout to move the game to the second inning. The Golden Bears were sat down one, two, three in the second. So were the Warriors. In the top of the third, Taylor Keegan got on base with a single. However, Rubeck kept the Golden Bears from scoring. The bottom of the third saw the Warriors open up the scoring. It started with Emma Marelli hitting a double, which brought Maggie Baker home. Then, with Marelli on third and two outs, Alyssa Vilchez sent a single into right field to double the lead and make it 2-0 Warriors. The Golden Bears answered. Alex Ferriouolo hit a double, with no outs, to left field. That brought Madison Mason home. Then, after Emma Sands entered as the pitcher for the Warriors, Marley Rodriguez hit a sacrifice fly to center field and brought Ferriouolo home to tie the score at two. Blanchard struck out two of the three ECSU batters in the fourth to keep the score tied. Kailey Carrano gave the Golden Bears the lead with a two-run home run in the top of the fifth. Gracie Hemstock scored on the home run. Blanchard sat the Warriors down one, two, three once again in the bottom of the fifth. 

The Golden Bears kept the momentum going by tacking two more runs on in the sixth. Marley Rodriguez would score on an error. Angie Carrasquillo would then ground out, but it would bring Kim Baumann home to push the lead to 6-2. The Warriors would get two back in the sixth. Maddy Bowen doubled to score Alyssa Vilchez. Then, Sarah Remillard singled to bring Bowen home. The score was 6-4 after six innings of play. The seventh saw Sands sit down the Golden Bears one, two, three. Then, in the bottom of the inning, with one out, Emma Marelli doubled down the left field line, and the score was 6-5 with Maggie Baker scoring. Blanchard would get the final two outs and give the Golden Bears a 6-5 win in game one.

Around the Diamond:

  • Madison Mason led the Golden Bears at the plate by going 2-for-3.
  • Alex Ferriouolo and Kim Baumann each had a double. Kailey Carrano hit a two-run home run.
  • Emma Marelli, Alyssa Vilchez, and Maggie Baker each had two hits for the Warriors.
  • Emma Marelli had two doubles, Maddy Bowen had one double, and Maggie Baker had one, as well.
  • Maggie Rubeck pitched three innings, giving up two earned runs and striking out three batters. Emma Sands pitched four innings, giving up three earned runs.
  • Ava Blanchard pitched seven innings, giving up five earned runs and striking out four batters to earn the win.
  • The Golden Bears won game one 6-5.

Game 2: Eastern Connecticut State 3, Western New England 2

Alexa Boone would walk the first WNE batter. Then, would get the second batter to ground into a double play and the third to fly out to get out of the inning. Two ECSU batters got on base, but Evelyn Picone would stay calm and get out of the inning without giving up a run. Boone would get the Golden Bears out one, two, three in the second. Picone would see an ECSU runner get to third. However, Picone would get the final out to keep the score tied at zero. That would change in the third. Kim Baumann would score on an error by ECSU. Then, Gracie Hemstock hit a single to left field, and Taylor Keegan scored. The Golden Bears were up 2-0 after the top of the third. 

Picone struck out the first ECSU batter of the inning. Then, got the next two batters to ground out. The Golden Bears had a runner on second, with one out in the top of the fourth. However, Boone got out of the inning. With two outs and two on, Maggie Rubeck hit a double to left field, scoring Julia Boya and Alyssa Vilchez to tie the game at two after four innings of play. The top of the fifth saw the Golden Bears get two runners on base with one out. However, Alyssa Vilchez would enter as the pitcher for the Warriors and would get the final batter to hit into a double play. Picone answered with a one, two, three inning. Then, in the top of the sixth, the Golden Bears had a runner in scoring position with one out but could not get the runner home. The bottom of the sixth saw a batter get on base with a single. However, Picone would get out of the inning by striking out the next batter. The Golden Bears got the leadoff batter on in the top of the seventh but could not bring the runner home, and the game went to the bottom of the seventh tied at two. The Warriors got the first batter on base. Then, with one out and a runner on third, Maddy Bowen pinch hit and hit into a fielder's choice. However, it scored Kaley Laird, and the Warriors won the game 3-2.

  • Gracie Hemstock led the Golden Bears at the plate by going 2-for-4 with an RBI.
  • Maggie Rubeck led the Warriors at the plate by going 2-for-3, with two RBIs and the only extra-base hit of the game, which was a double.
  • Evelyn Picone pitched 6.1 innings, letting up four hits, one earned run, and struck out five batters.
  • Alexa Boone pitched 4.1 innings, letting up one earned run and striking out one batter.
  • Alyssa Vilchez pitched 2.2 innings, letting up one hit, no earned runs, and struck out two batters to earn the win.
  • The Warriors won the game 3-2.
