Golden Bears Complete the Sunday Sweep Over NJCU, Felician, and Centenary

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (January 26, 2025) – The Golden Bears hosted four teams for duals on Sunday. WNE would match up with three of those teams and complete the Sunday Sweep with a 45-3 victory over Centenary University, a 44-4 victory over Felician University, and a 40-10 victory over number 23-ranked New Jersey City University.

How it Happened (vs. Centenary):

The Golden Bears would only drop one weight class match versus Centenary on Sunday. Gianna Hernandez and Victoria Orender won the 103 lb. weight class and 110 lb. weight class matches by forfeit, respectively. Then, Centenary's Elizabeth Galladay would defeat Janieliz Cotto by decision 12-5 in the 117 lb. weight class match. The 124 lb. weight class and 131 lb. weight class matches were also forfeited by Centenary. Linda Holeman and Abigail Alicandro earned those victories, respectively. Rebecca Kilday and Noelle Alexander followed those wins up with two more wins. Kilday defeated Jenna Magrino via Fall at 1:52 in the 138 lb. weight class match, and Alexander defeated Kierstin Piontkowski via technical fall 10-0 at 1:18 in the 145 lb. weight class match. The Golden Bears then won the final three weight class matches via forfeit. Atiyana Williams won the 160 lb. weight class, Shalom Feliz Lopez won the 180 lb. weight class, and Samantha Rabkin won the 207 lb. weight class. The Golden Bears won their first match of the day 45-3.

The Golden Bears only dropped one match in their match versus Felician as well. Gianna Hernandez started the match with a win via forfeit in the 103 lb. weight class match. Victoria Orender followed that with a victory via fall at 1:34 versus Theresa Zeppetelli in the 110 lb. weight class. Hailey Laabs then defeated Karley Perrini via fall at 1:05 in the 117 lb. weight class. Ariel Casella then won via forfeit in the 124 lb. weight class match, and Abigail Alicandro won to take down KarleeRose Lowell via a 10-0 technical fall at 0:38 in the 131 lb. weight class match. Jaden Coppins would win the 138 lb. weight class match versus Valerie Iglesias via Fall 2:49. The 145 lb. weight class match saw Madison Dowd win via forfeit. After that, Atiyana Williams would defeat Celine Lantigua via Fall at 0:40 in the 160 lb. weight class match. The following match was the 180 lb. weight class match, and Shalom Feliz Lopez would win via forfeit. The match concluded with the 207 lb. weight class match. The Golden Bears' final match of the duals was against New Jersey City University, who was ranked number 23 entering the match. Gianna Hernandez won the 103 lb. weight class match via forfeit. Then, NJCU took the 110 lb. weight class and 117 lb. weight class matches. The 110 match saw Izabella Frezzo defeat Victoria Orender via 12-2 technical fall at 2:45, and the 117 match saw Hailey Beck defeat Rowan Macintosh via fall at 5:12. However, after that match, the Golden Bears would not surrender another match. Linda Holeman would start the WNE comeback with a win via fall at 1:46 versus Nuria Kojic in the 124 lb. weight class match, and Abigail Alicandro would win the 131 lb. weight class match over Valarie Maldonado via a 10-0 technical fall at 0:38. The 138 lb. weight class and 145 lb. weight class matches were won via forfeit by Jaden Coppins and Noelle Alexander, respectively. Atiyana Williams won the 160 lb. weight class match via fall at 4:40 versus Citlaly Condado and Shalom Feliz Lopez then would earn WNE the win via fall at 0:45 in the 180 lb. weight class match versus Fabiana Josa.
