Men’s Tennis Earns First Fall Win Of 2025, Tame Anchormen, 5-2

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (October 2, 2025) – The Western New England men's tennis team opened its 2025 fall schedule with a 5-2 victory over the Anchormen of Rhode Island College on Thursday afternoon, participating in the fall for the first time since 2023, earning the doubles point and four of six singles points to come away with the victory.

How it Happened:

Western New England earned the all-important doubles point to begin play in the match to come out with a 1-0 lead. In the third doubles spot, WNE's Kyle Poccia and Eston Fowler tag-teamed for a 6-2 victory to edge the Golden Bears in front. After RIC took the second doubles pairing by a score of 6-1, it would be up to the
top doubles teams to decide the opening point of the match. The match went the distance, needing a tiebreak, before Colby Esposito and Michel Abizaid Nunez pulled out a 7-6 (10-8) victory for the Golden Bears, earning the blue and gold the opening point of the match.

In singles action, two singles matches went the distance. Kyle Poccia earned a 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 win in the fifth spot, and Eston Fowler came out with a 6-1, 6-1 win for the Golden Bears in the sixth spot. WNE dropped the first and second singles matches with Colby Esposito fighting to a 6-7 (4-7), 7-5, 9-11 defeat. Michel Abizaid Nunez earned a 6-4, 6-3 win for WNE, which iced the match for the Golden Bears, while Nolan Jermain's 3-6, 6-4, 6-0 win in the fifth singles spot gave Western New England one extra point to give the home team a 5-2 victory in their first match of the season.
