KISSIMMEE, FL (March 10, 2025) – WNE was back at the Fortune Road Athletics Complex for day three of games versus Hiram College and Carlow University. The Golden Bears fell to the Terriers 2-1 after striking out ten WNE batters. The Golden Bears would see Carlow University make a comeback in the seventh inning and tie the game before the Golden Bears saw a throwing error help the team get the walk-off victory, 6-5.
Game 1: Hiram 2, Western New England 1
Game one saw Hiram's pitcher, Darian Kanno control the contest early. Kanno sat the Golden Bears down one, two, three in the first, with two strikeouts. Riley Kane answered by facing four batters and getting three out without a run scoring for the Golden Bears. Kane struck out one Terrier batter in the first. Kanno kept the perfect start going in the second by getting all three batters out and picking up another strikeout. The Terriers would give Kanno a one-run lead to work with in the bottom of the second. With two outs, the Terriers had three hits in a row, with the third being a hit to shortstop from Ari Torres. The throw to second was not in time, and on the throw, the runner scored, and the Terriers led 1-0 after two. The third inning saw Kanno strike out the side before Riley Kane answered with three outs on three batters, with one batter getting on but leaving early on a fly out. The top of the fourth inning saw WNE's Angelees Carrasquillo get the first hit off Kanno. However, Kanno would get the next three batters out and strike out another WNE batter. The Terriers would get a hit in the bottom of the fourth, but Kane held them to no runs in the inning. The Golden Bears saw the first runner get on base at the top of the fifth, but no runs were scored. With two outs and runners on first and second, Angel Santellan singled through the right side of the infield, and Hiram led 2-0. The top of the sixth inning saw the first two Golden Bear batters get out. Then, another two-out rally was sparked for the Golden Bears. The Golden Bears had runners on first and second when the Terriers had an error on a hit, which led to Marley Rodriguez scoring. WNE trailed 2-1 halfway through the sixth inning. Kane would get three outs with one strikeout during the sixth inning, and the Golden Bears would have one more chance to tie or lead the game. The Golden Bears would get a runner on base, but Kanno would get the final two outs and a strikeout to end the game and give Hiram the 2-1 win.
Around the Diamond:
- Darian Kanno would lead the Terriers to the win with 10 strikeouts and only let up two hits and one run. Kanno also went 1-for-3 from the plate.
- Megan Moser went 2-for-3 from the plate and scored one of the Terriers' two runs.
- Ari Torres and Angel Santellan had the RBIs for the Terriers.
- Angelees Carrasquillo and Marley Rodriguez had the two hits for the Golden Bears.
- Riley Kane struck out three batters, let up nine hits, and gave up two runs.
- The Terriers defeated WNE 2-1.
Game 2: Western New England 6, Carlow 5
The day's second game saw the Ava Blanchard pitch for the Golden Bears. Blanchard would let up one hit but no runs in the top of the first. Alex Ferriouolo would hit a triple down the right field line in the bottom of the first, but Haley Bicko would get the Celtics out of the inning by getting the final Golden Bear batter to ground out. The top of the second saw Blanchard shut the Celtics down once again with two strikeouts, outside of a single up the middle of the field. The Golden Bears would load the bases in the bottom of the second with one out. However, Bicko would get out of the jam, and the score was still stuck at 0-0. The Celtics could not get any runs in the third inning either. Blanchard had two more strikeouts in the third. The bottom of the inning was a great inning for WNE. They had three consecutive singles before Christina Salinas hit into a fielder's choice, and WNE led 1-0. Then, Gracie Hemstock grounded out to second base and brought a runner home to give WNE a 2-0 lead. Kim Baumann followed that RBI with another one when grounding out to shortstop. WNE led 3-0 after the third inning. The fourth inning was another great defensive inning for the Golden Bears. Shea McDaniel would double to left field to start the fourth. However, with two on base and no outs, the Golden Bears would get shut down from there and would not extend their lead in the fourth inning. With two outs in the top of the fifth, McKenna Pierce singled to center field and scored the first run for the Celtics. WNE led 3-1. WNE could not answer in the fifth inning, and the score stayed at 3-1 going into the sixth inning. The top of the sixth saw Bicko single up the middle of the field when the Golden Bears were one out away from getting out of the inning. That single saw another Celtic run score, and the WNE lead was cut to one, 3-2. The sixth inning saw the Golden Bears extend their lead when Nicolina Solanto singled through the middle of the field and drove home two of the three runners to give WNE a 5-2 lead. After two outs, Carlow was up to bat, and WNE was three outs away from the win. Evelyn Picone entered the pitcher for WNE. With two outs and the Golden Bears one out away from a victory, the Celtics rallied. Anna Schumacher walked and drove in one run. Riley Kane would enter at pitcher after that. A WNE error led to two runs being scored for the Celtics, and they tied the Golden Bears 5-5. However, WNE would not shy away from the contest. With a runner on, Angelees Carrasquillo would reach first on an error, bringing a runner home. The Golden Bears had a walk-off 6-5 win.
Around the Diamond:
- Alex Ferriouolo led the Golden Bears with a 3-for-3 performance, including a triple.
- Kim Baumann and Shea McDaniel both went 2-for-4 during the game. Baumann had an RBI and McDaniel had a double.
- Nicolina Solanto went 1-for-1 with two RBIs in that one at-bat.
- The Golden Bear pitchers let up seven hits and five runs while striking out five batters.
- Two Celtic batters had two hits during the game.
- McKenna Pierce went 2-for-3 with one RBI and a walk. Mackenzie Egley went 2-for-4 during the game.
- The Celtics' pitchers let up 13 hits and six runs. They picked up one strikeout each for a total of two strikeouts.
- WNE defeated Carlow University 6-5.
