Golden Bears Give Up Four Runs in the Bottom of the Eighth Inning of Game Two and Lose to the Bison 5-4 in Nine Innings to Split the Doubleheader

DUDLEY, Mass. (March 31, 2025) – WNE's softball team traveled to Dudley, Massachusetts, for a doubleheader versus the Bison from Nichols College on Monday. The Golden Bears would score six runs after being down 3-1 going into the sixth inning. Angelees Carrasquillo led the Golden Bears by going 3-for-4 with a double and one RBI. Alex Ferriouolo would hit two doubles, which scored three runs. Game two saw a pitching dual between Molly Medor and Riley Kane go to extra innings tied 0-0. Both teams would score four in the eighth inning, but the Bison would get the lone run in the ninth inning and win the game on a walk-off single to help the Bison split the doubleheader.

Game 1: Western New England 7, Nichols College 3

Game one started with a strong pitching battle. Both pitchers, Chelsea Indyk and Ava Blanchard would see three batters from the opposition and get all three out. Blanchard picked up one strikeout in the first inning. The second inning saw a similar scenario play out. Indyk would sit the Golden Bears down one, two, three before the Bison would get the game's first hit. However, Blanchard would get the next three batters out and limit the Bison to just the one hit and no runs. The Golden Bears would open up the scoring with Shea McDaniel scoring on an Angelees Carrasquillo double down the left field line. WNE led 1-0 going into the bottom of the third after being held to just that run. Blanchard continued the top-notch pitching by getting the Bison out one, two, three in the bottom of the inning. Indyk would mirror that in the top of the fourth by getting the first batter to ground out, the second batter to line out, and the third batter to pop out. The bottom of the fourth saw the Bison bats get started. A double from Allie Silliman would drive home a run, and then Erin Gour sent a 2-run homerun over the center field fence to give the Bison a 3-1 lead after four innings of play. Indyk followed that for the Bison by getting all three batters out and picked up another strikeout to end the inning. The Bison threatened to score again in the fifth with a runner on third and one out. However, Blanchard got out of the situation, and WNE went to the plate in the sixth, looking to cut into the two-run Bison lead. They would not just cut into the lead but tie the game in the top of the sixth. It started with a couple of errors from the Bison on a bunt from Marley Rodriguez, leading to Angelees Carrasquillo running home to cut the Bison lead to 3-2. Then, with runners on first and third and one out, Alex Ferriouolo sent a double into deep left field, and that tied the game at 3-3. The Bison pitcher would get the next two outs and strike out the final Golden Bear batter to keep the score tied and strand two WNE runners on base. The Bison tried to answer in the bottom of the sixth when they had runners on second and third with one out. However, Blanchard would get the next two Bison batters to ground out, and WNE would get out of the inning unscathed. The Golden Bears would take that momentum and take the lead in the top of the seventh. Marley Rodriguez started the inning with a double, which brought one run home. Then, Nicolino Solanto would hit a sacrifice fly to left field, driving Angelees Carrasquillo home. WNE led 5-3. Then, Alex Ferriouolo would hit a second double of the game to right-center field, and WNE led 7-3 after the top of the seventh. The Bison would once again get runners on first and third with one out in the bottom of the seventh. However, Blanchard would get the final two batters out and earn the 7-3 win for the Golden Bears.

Around the Diamond:

  • Angelees Carrasquillo would lead the Golden Bears from the plate with a 3-for-4 performance. Carrasquillo hit two doubles and one RBI.
  • Alex Ferriouolo went 2-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs.
  • Shea McDaniel and Marley Rodriguez would have extra-base hits, with both players hitting doubles.
  • Ava Blanchard pitched the complete game, giving up three earned runs and striking out one batter.
  • The Bison were led by a 3-for-3, one RBI performance from Allie Silliman, which included a double.
  • Erin Gour went 2-for-3 from the plate with two RBIs, a double, and a home run.
  • Chelsea Indyk pitched a complete game for the Bison, letting up seven earned runs and striking out five Golden Bear batters.
  • WNE won game one 7-3.

Game 2: Nichols College 5, Western New England 4 (9 Innings)

Game two saw the Golden Bears get the first hit in the first inning. However, they could not get a run home, and neither could the Bison, as Riley Kane saw three Bison batters and got all three out. The Golden Bears had a chance in the top of the second as they had runners on second and third and one out. However, Bison pitcher Molly Medor would get out of the inning by getting the next two batters to pop out and keep the score at 0-0. The Bison also got a runner on base in the second, but Kane held them scoreless. In the third inning, the Golden Bears sent three batters to the plate, and Medor got all three out. The Bison followed that with a hit, but once again, Kane held the Bison to just one hit and got the next three batters to hit into outs. The fourth saw the pitching dual continue as both pitchers kept the opposing offense from recording a run or even a hit in the fourth inning. The Golden Bears would hit a double in the top of the fifth and would get the runner to third with two outs but could not bring the runner home, and the score stayed tied at 0-0. Kane would continue the dominant pitching performance with three more consecutive outs, including a strikeout. Medor answered with three consecutive outs, including a strikeout. That brought the contest to the bottom of the sixth inning, where the Bison recorded a hit, but Kane struck out another batter and got the final batter to ground out to send the game to the seventh inning with the teams still stuck at 0-0. Medor would not let up a run in the top of the seventh. Medor struck out the first two batters, saw the third batter get to first, but then got the fourth batter out, and WNE was forced to defend the bottom of the seventh inning to extend the game to extra innings. Kane would extend the contest by getting all three Bison batters to ground out. The Golden Bears would open up the score in the top of the eighth inning thanks to an Angelees Carrasquillo double down the left field line, which scored Czarkowski. Then, Marley Rodriguez doubled to center field, which brought Carrasquillo home to give WNE a 2-0 lead. The Golden Bears were not done, though. Katherine Brooks would pinch hit and deliver a first-career Golden Bear homerun over the left field fence to give WNE a 4-0 lead. Alex Ferriouolo followed the home run with a triple to right field. The Bison would bring Ally McNamee in to pitch after the triple. McNamee would get the final out of the top of the eighth inning. However, the Golden Bears got four runs and needed three more outs to seal the doubleheader sweep. The Bison would not shy away, though. Hannah Cozza hit a single to center field, which brought a runner home in the bottom of the eighth inning. After another runner got on base and the Golden Bears got an out, Ava Slavinsky would hit a single, but an error would bring Slavinsky to third, and the Bison cut the WNE lead to 4-3. Then, Riley Chartier singled to center field, and an error brought Chartier to third, tying the game at 4-4. Kane would not let the Bison get a walk-off winning hit but would get the next two hitters to ground out, and the contest went into the ninth inning. The Golden Bears would not be able to earn a run in the top of the ninth, which gave the Bison the opportunity to steal the win in the bottom of the inning. That is exactly what Chloe Steiniger would do with a runner on third and one out. Steiniger hit a single and won the game for the Bison, 5-4, in nine innings.

Around the Diamond:

  • Ava Slavinsky led the Bison by going 2-for-4, with two RBIs and a single that turned into a triple with an error.
  • Three other Bison recorded RBI's including Chloe Steiniger, who had the game-winning RBI single.
  • Ally McNamee would earn the win in the pitching circle for the Bison by pitching 1.1 innings and not letting up a hit.
  • The Golden Bears were led by Marley Rodriguez and Alex Ferriouolo, who both went 2-for-4 from the plate. Rodriguez had an RBI and a double.
  • Katherine Brooks earned a first career Golden Bear homerun in Brooks' only at-bat of the day.
  • Kane pitched 8.1 innings for the Golden Bears, giving up five runs and six hits.
  • The Golden Bears fell to the Bison 5-4 in 9 Innings.
