Picture Perfect Ending: Golden Bears Women’s Tennis Edges Western Connecticut In Season Finale

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 14, 2025) – The Western New England women's tennis team came up with a victory in their final match of the spring on Monday afternoon from Forest Park Tennis Courts, defeating the Wolves of Western Connecticut State University by a final score of 4-3. The important doubles point would go WNE's way while a late rally in the sixth singles spot would secure the Golden Bears the win.

How It Happened:

In quick-moving doubles play, Western Connecticut came up with the first win in the second doubles spot, needing just one more win to secure the all-important first point of the match. In the top doubles spot, it would be Western New England's Emma Miller and Sydney Shepard coming away with the win, a 6-2 victory. The first point would come down to the third doubles spot where Kayla Ledoux and Kelsey Wyse would battle with West Conn's Brooke Stillman and Jessica Nyitrai. WNE and Western Connecticut would be tied at five but the Golden Bears would steal the next two points to take a 7-5 win in the match to earn WNE the first point of the match overall. 

In singles play, Yasmine Giacalone picked up a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Stillman to gain WNE another point, taking a 2-0 lead in the match. The Wolves stormed back to tie the match at two with wins in the third and fourth singles pairings, respectively. Emma Miller earned the Golden Bears the win in the top singles spots, seeing the match needed three sets to finalize. Miller would drop the opener 7-6 (6-4) before storming back for 6-2, 6-1 victories, putting WNE ahead 3-2. Sydney Shepard's second spot singles match would also go three sets where the WNE junior would come up just short, falling 2-6, 7-5, 3-6. The match would come down to the singles six spot where Kayla Ledoux would fall 7-6 (7-5) in the opening set but would complete the comeback in the final two sets for 6-3, 7-5 wins, which earned the Golden Bears a 4-3 victory overall in the match, the teams' first win in 11 matches overall this season.
