Bristol, R.I. (April 30, 2025) – The Golden Bears went 0-1 versus the Hawks of Roger Williams University on Wednesday. A five-run sixth inning saw the Hawks take game one, with Christina Denovellis leading the way with a 3-for-3 performance, with two doubles and two RBIs. Game two saw WNE hold a 3-0 lead until the seventh inning when RWU scored three in the seventh to send the game to extra innings. WNE would score two runs in extra innings thanks to a Marley Rodriguez single and an Angelees Carrasquillo fielder's choice bunt. Riley Kane would get the final three outs, ending with a strikeout, and WNE won game two 5-3 in eight innings.
Game 1: Roger Williams 7, Western New England 3
Game one saw the Hawks take the lead two times. The Golden Bears fought back from each one. However, the third lead would give the Hawks the win. Raegan Germano started the game in the pitching circle for the Hawks. Germano saw three Golden Bear batters and got all three out to start the game. Lucy Maurao gave the Hawks their first lead of the game when Maurao scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the first inning with one out. WNE pitcher Ava Blanchard would get out of the inning with two consecutive outs after that. Blanchard picked up two strikeouts during the inning. RWU led 1-0 after the first. The second saw three batters get up and three batters get out for WNE, with RWU turning a double play. Then, Blanchard picked up another strikeout in the bottom of the second when Blanchard saw four RWU batters and got three out. The top of the third saw Germano make it nine consecutive outs versus the Golden Bear batters with three strikeouts in that inning. Blanchard answered with three outs versus four batters, including a fourth strikeout against the Hawks. The top of the fourth saw the Golden Bears tie the game at one thanks to a Riley Kane single to left field, which drove Marley Rodriguez home. The score was tied at 1-1, but only for a few minutes. Germano got the final out of the top of the fourth after the hit, and Christina Denovellis hit a two-out double to left field, which brought home a second run for the Hawks. RWU led 2-1 after the fourth inning. The Golden Bears got out of the inning thanks to Marley Rodriguez throwing out a Hawk runner attempting to reach home on a single. Angelees Carrasquillo tagged out the runner at home. The fifth saw the Golden Bears answer. Alex Ferriouolo launched a home run over the left-center field fence. That tied the game 2-2. Germano got the next three outs, which included another strikeout, to get into the bottom of the fifth inning. The Hawks got a hit to start the inning, but Blanchard would get the next three outs, with the final out being a strikeout. The Golden Bears were able to get runners on first and second with one out, but Germano got the next batter to fly out and then got the final batter to strike out. The Hawks would gain their third lead of the contest and would hold this lead. It started with the first batter, Caroline Thomas, who hit a leadoff home run to gift the Hawks a 302 lead. Then, Christina Denovellis hit a double with one out. That brought a runner home, and RWU led 4-2. Evelyn Picone then entered the game as the WNE pitcher. Jamie Wells followed that with a single to left field to improve the RWU lead to 5-2. Then, with two outs, Hailey Williams doubled to right field, scoring two runs. However, Ava Barnhart would throw out Williams, who tried to reach third on the hit, and that ended the inning. The Golden Bears had one more chance to extend the game. Ava Barnhart did help the Golden Bears cut the deficit to four with a solo home run. However, that was the last run Germano gave up, and RWU won game one, 7-3.

Game 2: Western New England 5, Roger Williams 3
Game two saw Riley Kane and Keira Quadros faceoff in the pitching circle for the Golden Bears and Hawks. The Golden Bears got on the scoreboard first when Riley Kane hit a one-out double to center field. That brought Angelees Carrasquillo home, and WNE had a 1-0 early lead. They would then load the bases with one out. However, Quadros would get the following two outs, with one of them being a strikeout, and sent the game to the bottom of the first. Kane saw three batters and got all three out in the bottom of the first. The second inning saw WNE extend their lead. It started with Marley Rodriguez grounding out to second, which drove Ava Barnhart home to give WNE a 2-0 lead. Then, Angelees Carrasquillo grounded out to shortstop, bringing Shea McDaniel home, and WNE led 3-0. The Hawks would look to answer with runners on second and third and no outs to start the bottom half of the second. However, Kane got the next three batters out and did not give up a run. Quadros dealt with the Golden Bear batters in the top of the third, seeing four batters and getting three out, with the second batter getting struck out by Quadros. Then, in the bottom of the third, Kane got the first two batters out, and the third batter got a single, but Kane got the final out to advance the game to the fourth inning. In the fourth, the Golden Bears had runners on second and third with one out. However, Quadros got the Golden Bears to line into a double play, and the score stayed stuck at 3-0. Kane sat the Hawks down one, two, three in the bottom of the fourth, and WNE was back at the plate in the fifth. The Golden Bears had two singles in the top of the fifth but could not get either runner home. In the bottom of the fifth, the first batter got on base via a single. However, Kane got the next three outs and kept the shutout alive. The Golden Bears also had a hit in the top of the sixth inning, but they could not extend their lead past three in the top of the inning, and RWU walked up to the plate for the bottom of the sixth. Different inning, but the same story for Kane. Kane let up the first hit of the inning but got the next three batters out one, two, three to keep the Golden Bears up by three. In the seventh, the Golden Bears got the first hit, a single, but Quadros would strand that runner on base, and the Hawks were down to their final three outs of the game. Once again, the Hawks got their first runner on base. After Kane got the next batter out, the Hawks had another single, and the Hawks had runners on first and second with one out. The Hawks would score after that. Keira Quadros reached first on a fielder's choice to second base. However, there was a throwing error from the Golden Bears, and that brought a runner home, with the Golden Bears picking up the second out. WNE led 3-1. However, Lucy Maurao would single after that, bringing one more run in. WNE's lead was cut to 3-2 with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning. That's when Shannon Starratt tripled to right field, which brought the tying run home. The teams were tied 3-3. After that, Kane got the final out of the inning, and the teams went to extra innings. The Golden Bears got their lead back in the eighth thanks to a Marley Rodriguez single to left field, which drove Kim Baumann home. Then, Angelees Carrasquillo reached first base on a fielder's choice on the bunt. Shea McDaniel scored on the bunt, and WNE led 5-3. Quadros got two of the next three batters to strike out, and WNE led by two, going to the bottom of the eighth inning. Riley Kane would get the first batter to fly out, and then the runner on second was out due to leaving early. Kane ended the game with a strikeout, and WNE won game two 5-3 in eight innings.
