WENHAM, Mass. (March 30, 2026) – WNE traveled to Gordon College for their second conference matchup of the season. The Golden Bears would fight back into game one after trailing 2-0 early. However, three last-inning runs from the Fighting Scots saw WNE fall in game one via a walk-off. Game two saw WNE jump out to a 6-0 lead thanks to doubles from
Evelyn Picone and
Ava Barnhart. They never looked back, winning the second contest 7-3 to split the doubleheader.
Game One:
Score:
- Western New England: 4
- Gordon College: 5
How it Happened:
First Inning:
- The first contest of the doubleheader started with the Golden Bears loading the bases with no outs, but not being able to bring a run home. Emily Graham would enter as the new pitcher for Gordon before the outs, and Riley Kane would handle the Fighting Scots' offense in the first inning.
Second Inning:
- The second saw two more runners stranded on base for WNE, but Gordon was able to drive two runners home via a single from Lizzie DeRusha, driving Graham home, and a ground out from Samantha Perkins to bring Makayla Falco home. WNE trailed 2-0.
Third Inning:
- WNE could not make a dent in the deficit in the top of the third, and although Gordon had the bases loaded and one out, they would leave all three runners stranded as Kane got out of the inning.
Fourth and Fifth Innings:
- Both the fourth and fifth innings saw the pitchers each grab a strikeout, and only WNE would get a solo runner on base, but no runs were scored from either side.
Sixth Inning:
- The Golden Bears evened the game in the sixth through a Katherine Brooks bunt that saw Keira Czarkowski score on a throwing error. Brooks' bunt was a true single. Then, Katelyn Bailey singled and drove Brooks home. WNE tied the game at two after the sixth.
Seventh Inning:
- The top of the seventh saw WNE take a 4-2 lead. Nicolina Salanto had a hit that saw her get thrown out at first, but it drove Carrasquillo home. Then, Evelyn Picone had a sacrifice fly ball that Riley Kane scored on.
- The bottom of the inning saw a single from Caomihe Wernsing, scoring Isabella Rivera. WNE led 4-3. Then, Emily Graham doubled into left, scoring McKayla Kelly and Morgan Barrett to walk off the contest and defeat WNE 5-4.
Inside the Diamond:
- Gordon College defeated WNE 5-4.
- Caomihe Wernsing went 2-3 with a walk and two singles to lead the Fighting Scots from the plate.
- Emily Graham had the lone double for Gordon, which ended up being the game-winning hit.
- Katherine Brooks led WNE at the plate by going 2-4.
- Seven total batters had a hit for WNE in game one.
- Emily Graham earned the win from the pitching circle for Gordon, pitching seven innings, letting up two earned runs, eight hits, and striking out three batters.
Game Two:
- Western New England: 7
- Gordon College: 3
How it Happened:
First Inning:
- The first innings saw both pitchers, Emilie Adelmann and Brianna Cardona, fly through the first inning with only WNE getting a lone hit. No runs were scored, though.
Second Inning:
- WNE took the early lead in the second when Alyssa Ferriouolo hit a sacrifice fly ball, scoring Katelyn Bailey. Then, Cardona stranded two runners on base after those two runners got on base to start the inning.
Third Inning:
Fourth Inning:
- WNE had three more hits in the fourth, but no runs, before Gordon had four consecutive hits to start their half of the fourth inning. Samantha Perkins reached on a muffed throw. Emilie Adelmann scored.
- Katie Melendy then grounded out, scoring Emily Graham, and Peyton Heitzman singled to score Makayla Falco. WNE led 6-3 after the fourth.
Sixth Inning:
- Neither team could score in the fifth, with Gordon getting the lone hit. However, an Evelyn Picone single drove Angelees Carrasquillo home in the sixth, and WNE led 7-3 after hitting three outs in the bottom of the inning after a first-batter walk.
Seventh Inning:
- WNE would get shut out in the top of the seventh, leaving three more outs for Gordon to get four or more runs and possibly walk the game off again.
- They did their best, loading the bases with one out in the seventh. However, Sophia Keays entered the game and struck out the final two batters to help WNE hold onto a 7-3 win.
Inside the Diamond:
- WNE defeated Gordon in game two 7-3.
- Angelees Carrasquillo went 3-for-4 with a double to help lead WNE from the plate.
- Evelyn Picone also led WNE from the plate by going 3-4 with three RBIs and a double.
- Katelyn Bailey and Ava Barnhart also had multi-hit games for WNE. Barnhart had two RBIs and a double, also.
- Emilie Adelmann went 3-for-4 with a double to lead Gordon at the plate.
- Brianna Cardona was credited with the win, pitching six innings, letting up five hits, one earned run, and striking out two batters.
