Box Score BOSTON, Mass. - Western New England College started strong, but couldn't maintain its edge eventually dropping a 9-2 decision at Wentworth Institute of Technology Thursday night in its ECAC Northeast men's hockey opener at Matthews Arena.
The Golden Bears took an early 1-0 lead on a goal by sophomore Shawn Longley (Lewiston, ME) at the 5:13 mark of the opening period. Freshman Mike Majesty (Chicago, IL) and senior Pat Henderson (Marlton, NJ) had the assists.
Wentworth (2-0) tied the contest less than two minutes before the Golden Bears went ahead 2-1 when sophomore Nick Sampson (Reading, MA) hit the back of the net at the 15:04 mark with an assist from junior Mike Amato (Mt. Laurel, NJ).
Then, for the second straight conest, the roof caved in as the Leopards scored six unaswered goals in the second period for a commanding 7-2 lead.
"We played a strong first period, then things fell apart," said Western New England College coach Karl Enroth. "We had some scoring opportunities, especially in the third period, but couldn't convert. Plus, we made too many mental mistakes that really hurt us."
The Golden Bears (0-2)Â have the weekend off before visiting Southern New Hampshire in an ECAC Northeast encounter starting at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday (Nov. 15).
