Western New England College bows to Springfield

WESTFIELD, Mass. - Western New England College held its own against nationally-ranked Springfield before finally dropping a 55-43 decision Saturday in the second day of action at the fourth annual Pioneer Valley Women's Hoop Classic.

The Golden Bears, playing without senior guard and team co-captain Jess Harrica who was injured Friday night, came out strong against the Pride taking a 25-20 lead at intermission.

Western New England College (3-2) then went scoreless for approximately 10 minutes and Springfield took a 34-25 lead with 13:45 remaining in the game. The Golden Bears made a brief comeback with six unanswered points to get within three at the 12:15 mark, but Springfield pulled away down the stretch.

Senior center Lisa Masella (Newtown, CT) scored 10 points (all in the second half) and added seven rebounds for Western New England College. Sophomore guard Tiffany DeRosa (Hamden, CT) collected nine points with three rebounds and three assists before fouling out. Both players were selected to the All-Classic Team.

MVP Classic MVP Erin Schwartz led Springfield (4-1) with 18 points and nine rebounds. The Pride are ranked 13th nationally in the d3hoops.com poll.
