Box Score AUBURN, Mass. - The Western New England College men's hockey team came close to winning its first game Sunday night, but wound up falling 3-2 in overtime at Nichols College in a non-conference matchup.
After a scoreless first period, the Golden Bears took a 1-0 lead on the first collegiate goal by freshman Joe Balog (Ludlow, MA) at 2:24 of the second stanza. Senior Pat Henderson (Marlton, NJ) had the assist.
The Bison came back to take a 2-1 lead entering the final period.
Western New England College (0-6-1) tied the contest when freshman Mike Majesty (Chicago, IL) scored at 1:36 with assists from Henderson and freshman Hank Levin (Lido Beach, NY).
The teams kept one another off the board until Kyle Cook scored the game-winner for Nichols 26 seconds into overtime.
Senior goalie Brian Essig (Saddle Brook, NJ) was outstanding for the Golden Bears finishing with 45 saves to earn the second star of the game award.
