Box Score WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Sophomore center Jon Hayes (Waltham, MA) had two goals and an assist, but Western New England College remained winless in the ECAC Northeast after dropping a 6-4 decision to Johnson and Wales University in men's hockey action Saturday night at the Olympia Ice Center.
The Golden Bears trailed 2-1 after the first period, but Hayes tied the contest with a short-handed goal (his first in a WNEC uniform) at the 6:26 mark of the second stanza. The Wildcats answered by scoring three times in a 5:39 span (including a short-handed goal and another on a power play) to take a 5-2 lead after 40 minutes.
Coach Karl Enroth saw his team briefly rally when Hayes (a transfer from Norwich)Â netted his second goal of the evening at 5:10 followed by a goal by senior defenseman Dave Wright (New City, NY) just 1:22 later.
JWU (7-10-1, 5-3) tallied an insurance goal at the 7:35 mark and then kept the Golden Bears off the board the rest of the way. Freshmen Philip Axelson (Gothenburg, Sweden) and Mike O'Malley (Woonsocket, RI) each had two goals and an assist while freshman Axel von Sydow (Gothenburg, Sweden) chipped in with three assists.
Freshman forward Hank Levin (Lido Beach, NY) contributed two assists for Western New England College who saw its record dip to 3-11-3 overall and 0-8-2 heading into a road contest Tuesday night at Suffolk.
