Rookie has big day in leading Western New England College past MIT

Box Score

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Sophomore running back Jordan Capitanio (Torrington, CT) tied a school record with four touchdowns and freshman quarterback Justin Walz (Groton, CT) threw for two more scores and 284 yards in his first collegiate start as Western New England College avenged last year's loss at Steinbrenner Stadium with a 42-25 victory over MIT Saturday (Oct. 14) in a New England Football Conference (NEFC) Boyd Division slugfest.

The Golden Bears also broke a three-game losing in the process, evened their record at 3-3, and won their first division game of the season.

Capitanio rushed for only 64 yards on 23 carries, but scored on runs of 6, 5, 2, and 9 yards in tying the single game scoring mark he set last year against Framingham State. Rich Tuggey, Marvin Langley (three times), and Mike Laroche (twice) also scored four touchdowns in a game.

Walz, meanwhile, set a school record with 28 completions in 39 attempts with one interceptions. He tossed a 16-yard scoring pass to freshman wide receiver Matt O'Brien (South Windsor, CT) that gave the Golden Bears a 7-6 lead with 4:24 left in the first period. It was the first collegiate touchdown for O'Brien. Walz moved ahead of Jon Tallerico who had 25 completions last year against Curry. Walz also ran for 46 yards on nine carries to complete a 330-yard afternoon.

Western New England College led 28-13 at half-time and upped its margin to 35-13 when Walz connected on a 54-yard strike with junior wide reciver Kevin Miculcy (Greenwich, CT) just 2:39 into the third stanza. Miculcy finished with seven receptions for 112 yards and moved into second place on the school's all-time list with 123 catches, just one behind leader Keith Fagan.

Junior running back Mike Bishop (Belchertown, MA) did a nice job in his first collegiate start rushing for a game-high 84 yards on 19 carries.

Senior free safety Jim Kantany (East Longmeadow, MA) made seven solo tackles while senior cornerback Jay Rooney (El Segundo, CA) had two interceptions and senior linebacker Matt Guaragna (Port CHester, NY) one.

MIT (1-5, 0-4 Boyd) scored twice on two long runs after Miculcy's touchdown to close the gap to 35-25 with 1:12 remaining in the third quarter. The Engineers finished with 305 yards, but had four turnovers.

But unlike last year when WNEC lost 31-27 after blowing a 24-point half-time lead, the Golden Bears answered with Capitanio's final score from nine yards out with 12:22 left in the contest.

Western New England College compiled a season high 478 yards on 90 plays and made 9-of-17 third-down conversions.
