MARLBORO, Mass. - Sophomore forward Philip Lamy (Manchester, NH) scored two goals and had an assist as the Western New England College men's ice hockey team opened its season with a 4-2 victory over host Becker College in the third-place game of the Dunkin' Donuts Cup Invitational Saturday (Nov. 4).
It aso was the first victory for former Clarkson standout Chris Bernard who was making his head coaching debut for the Golden Bears.
Lamy gave Western New England College a 1-0 lead with an unassisted goal at 7:01 of the opening period.
The Golden Bears went ahead 2-0 on a goal by junior forward Nick Sampson (Reading, MA) at the 5:55 mark of the second period. Junior forward Shawn Longley (Raymond, ME) and sophomore forward Jason Remsbecker (Farmingdale, NY) had the assists.
Becker (1-3) pulled within a goal at the end of the middle stanza and then tied the contest at 8:20 of the third period.
Senior forward Mike Amato (Mt. Laurel, NJ) then fired home the game-winner just 3:15 later with assists from Lamy and sophomore defenseman Jake Rinaldo (Union, NJ).
Lamy sealed the victory with an empty net goal with 12 seconds remaining in the contest.
Junior goalie Brandon Gervais (Lewiston, ME) finished with 26 saves.
Western New England College had dropped a 4-3 decision to North Country Communitry College in an exhibition game in the opening round of the tournament on Friday.
