WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Western New England College men's hockey team allowed a pair of third period goals as Fitchburg State College rallied for a 4-2 non-league victory Tuesday (Nov. 7) at the Olympia Ice Center.
The Golden Bears, who were making their home opener, took a 1-0 lead on a power play goal by sophomore defenseman Joe Balog (Ludlow, MA) just 2:30 into the game. Sophomore defenseman Jake Rinaldo (Union, NJ) and sophomore forward Hank Levin assisted on the play.
Fitchburg State (1-0) tied the game 50 seconds into the second period before freshman Matt Haddock (Hilliard, OH) put Western New England College ahead for the final time at the 11:10 mark with an assist from sophomore left wing Phil Lamy (Manchester, NH). The Falcons scored with 1:42 remaining in the stanza for a 2-2 tie.
Senior forward Mike Dryer (Rockland, MA) then tallied the game-winner 1:50 into the third period. Senior forward Jason Ledo (Somerset, MA) added an insurance goal on a power play at the 8:05 mark. Dryer also contributed two assists. Senior forward Stephen Schofield (Valley Village, CA) chipped-in with three assists.
Western New England College junior goalie Brandon Gervais (Lewiston, ME) finished with 33 saves while FSC freshman goalie Chris Guyer (Northboro, MA) stopped 28 shots.
The Golden Bears (1-1) host Wentworth Institute of Technology in their ECAC Northeast opener at 8:30 p.m. Thursday (Nov. 9).
