Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass. â€" Sophomore guard Matt Maynard (Paterson, NJ) scored 21 points and sophomore forward Kyle Fredette (Wallingford, VT) had a season high 18 points to lead the Western New England College men’s basketball team to a 70-53 victory over visiting Curry College in an non-league game Thursday night (Dec. 7) at the Alumni Healthful Living Center.
Junior guard Ryan Hernandez (Hampton Bays, NY) came off the bench to add 15 points as the Golden Bears evened their record at 4-4.
Maynard made 7-of-11 shots from the field, including 5-of-6 three-point attempts. Hernandez also connected on five three-pointers as WNEC made 10-of-26 shots from beyond the arc.
With Maynard scoring the team's first eight points, the Golden Bears took a 38-29 lead into intermission.
Western New England College played strong defense in the second half holding the Colonels without a field goal for a 7:38 stretch.
The Golden Bears had their biggest lead at 63-40 with 8:12 remaining in the game following back-to-back baskets by Fredette.
Senior forward Toby Brittian (Providence, RI) led Curry (2-7) with 15 points while senior guard Stephen Prescod (Milton, MA) had 13 points and six rebounds. Junior center Johnathan Bowers (Kalamazoo, MI) also scored in double figures with 12 points.
This was only the third meeting between the schools and first since the 1976-77 season when Western New England College prevailed by a 98-83 score. The Golden Bears also beat the Colonels 122-87 in the first meeting during the 1967-68 campaign.
