SPRINGFIELD, Mass. â€" The Western New England College softball team ran its winning streak to 20 games with a 6-3, 8-0 doubleheader sweep over Fitchburg State College in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon. The Golden Bears banged out 25 hits in the two contests in raising their record to 24-4.
In the first game, sophomore Jackie Card (Greenfield, MA) went 2-for-2 and tied the game with a pinch-hit single in a four-run fourth. The Golden Bears then pushed across the go-ahead run on an error.
Freshman shortstop Brittany DeGennaro (Orange, CT) also had two hits and a RBI while senior catcher Kristy Kehoss (Cheshire, CT) had a single and two runs.
Sophomore Alex Paterson (Deep River, CT) went the first six innings allowing seven hits and no earned runs with six strikeouts and no walks to improve to 9-2. Freshman Amanda Poyant (Barnstable, MA) pitched two scoreless innings for her second save of the season.
For Fitchburg, junior shortstop Keri Kravetz (West Bridgewater, MA), junior second base player Danielle MacDonald (Brockton, MA), and freshman first base player Eryne Cotter (North Easton, MA) each had two hits.
In the second game, Western New England College broke open a scoreless game with four runs in the third highlighted by the game-winning RBI single by senior left fielder Jen Piorkowski (Trumbull, CT) who finished 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run. Five other players had two hits.
Freshman Laura Bower (Hudson, MA) gave up only four hits in four innings and struck out one to win for the seventh time in eight decisions.
