WEST HAVEN, Conn. - In two well-played games, the Western New England College softball team got back on the winning track with a 1-0, 4-1 doubleheader sweep over Albertus Magnus College Thrusday in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action.
Freshmen Brittany DeGennaro (Orange, CT) and Amanda Poyant (Barnstable, MA) combined on a four-hit shutout in the opener. DeGennaro went the first six innings allowing four hits with five strikeouts and no walks to improve her record to 6-1. Poyant fanned one in the seventh to earn her fourth save of the season.
The Golden Bears scored the only run of the game in the fifth inning on doubles by senior catcher Kristy Kehoss (Cheshire, CT) and sophomore designated player Steph Ganser (Fairfield, CT).
In the nightcap, freshman Laura Bower (Hudson, MA) had a complete game performance after giving up four hits with four strikeouts and no walks. She has a 10-2 record and team best 1.41 earned-run-average in her rookie season.
Western New England College trailed 1-0 before before scoring three times after two outs in the sixth. Junior third base player Jess Nelson (South Hadley, MA) tied the game with a RBI single before sophomore Meredith Pacelli (Hamden, CT) knocked in two runs with a pinch-hit double.
Western New England College, which ended a three-game losing streak, is now 29-7 overall and 21-1 in the GNAC.
