Western New England College miscues costly in loss against Amherst

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. â€" Sophomore designated player Ralina Shaw (Tumwater, WA) went 2-for-3 with a double, homer, and four runs-batted-in to lead visiting Amherst to a 6-3 victory over Western New England College in a non-conference softball game Tuesday.

The Jeffs took a 3-0 lead in the fourth on a two-out RBI single by junior third base player Caroline Polales (Winnetka, IL) and two-run homer over the center field fence by Shaw.

The Golden Bears (31-8) tied the game with three runs in the bottom of the fourth when freshman center fielder Brenna Fitzgerald (Manchester, NH) knocked in a run with a single followed by a two-run single by sophomore designated hitter Jackie Card (Greenfield, MA).

Amherst (16-8) scored an unearned run in the sixth and two more unearned runs in the seventh with Shaw bringing home both runs with a two-out double.

Sophomore Samantha Miller (Newton, MA) pitched two scoreless innings in relief to raise her record to 4-4.

WNEC senior left-fielder Jen Piorkowski (Trumbull, CT) was 3-for-3 while senior catcher Kristy Kehoss (Cheshire, CT) had two singles in four at-bats.
