SPRINGFIELD, Mass. â€" The Western New England College softball team ran its winning streak to 16 games and remained undefeated in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) after defeating visiting Johnson & Wales University by the scores of 6-3 and 11-3 Saturday.
Freshman right fielder Amanda Aceto (South Portland, ME) went 3-for-3 with a run and RBI in the opener while sophomore designated player Steph Ganser (Fairfield, CT) was 2-for-3 with two runs and a RBI. Freshman Brittany DeGennaro (Orange, CT) improved to 5-1 with a complete game effort allowing seven hits and one earned run with a pair of strikeouts and walks.
JWU sophomore designated player Kerry Cotter (Nashua, NH) and sophomore third base player Jill Silva (Somerset, MA) each went 2-for-3 with a run
In the second game, the Golden Bears banged out 14 hits with Ganser and sophomore first base player Jackie Card (Greenfield, MA) each getting two doubles and two runs. Card also had a pair of RBIs.
Junior designated player Jess Nelson (South Hadley, MA) and sophomore third base player Meredith Pacelli (Hamden, CT) each had two hits, including a double. Nelson also had three RBI while Pacelli knocked in two runs. Senior catcher Kristy Kehoss (Cheshire, CT) and freshman center fielder Brenna Fitzgerald (Manchester, NH) both contributed two hits. Sophomore Alex Paterson (Deep River, CT) (7-2) took the win.
For the Wildcats, senior catcher Carly Winer (Westwood, MA) went 2-for-2 with a run while senior second base player Michelle May (Commack, NY) had a RBI double and run.
Western New England College has a 20-4 record (14-0 GNAC) after winning its 58th consecutive regular season conference contest since 2004. Johnson & Wales falls to 8-14 and 6-7.
