SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Led by a big win from junior Meredith Hughes (Springfield, MA) at the top singles position, the Western New England College women's tennis team blanked visiting Suffolk University 9-0 in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match on a picture perfect Saturday afternoon (Sept. 16).
Hughes defeated 2005 GNAC Player-of-the-Year Jen Nelson in the 10-point super tie-breaker format. Last year Nelson was undefeated (10-0) against conference oppponents in singles competition. This also was Hughes' second win in the tie-breaker format in as many days after beating Lorena Asllani of Regis on Friday.
The victory was the fourth in a row for the Golden Bears (4-1) who remain unbeaten in the conference (3-0).
