Western New England College falls to Salve Regina in TCCC Tournament

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Fifth-seeded Salve Regina captured four of six singles matches for a 5-4 victory over fourth-seeded Western New England College in a quarterfinal round match of The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) Women's Tennis Tournament Tuesday afternoon (Oct. 16).

The Seahawks avenged an 8-1 loss to the Golden Bears during the regular season in Newport, Rhode Island.

With darkness settling over the WNEC courts, sophomore Erin Higgins (Glens Falls, NY) pulled out a 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 victory over junior Nicole Freed (Jersey Shore, PA) at the No. 6 singles position in the deciding match.

SRU senior Louise Taylor (Yarmouth, ME) defeated senior Meredith Hughes (Springfield, MA) (TCCC Player-of-the-Year) at the No. 1 singles spot in straight sets 6-3, 6-3.

The most exciting match for the Golden Bears took place at No. 2 doubles when senior Sara Peck (Monroe, CT) and sophomore Kristen Ayers (Acton, MA) battled back from a 7-4 (40 love) deficit for a 9-8 victory (7-3 tie-breaker).

Peck also captured her No. 4 singles match (6-4, 6-4) over junior Jessica Smith (Bristol, CT) while senior Devon Masse (Southbridge, MA) took a 7-6 (704), 6-3 decision over sophomore Andrea Dell'Accio (West Islip, NY) at the No. 5 singles spot.

WNEC's other win came at No. 3 dobles with Freed and senior Aimee Schapp (Torrington, CT) taking an 8-5 verdict.

Salve Regina (8-4) will meet the winner of the top-seeded Roger Williams vs. eighth-seeded Curry match in a semifinal contest on Wednesday, October 24.

Western New England College ends its season with a 10-5 record.

In other matches Tuesday, second-seeded Endicott blanked seventh-seeded Gordon 9-0 while third-seeded Colby-Sawyer defeated sixth-seeded Nichols 5-1.
