Western New England College drops close match against Colby-Sawyer

NEW LONDON, N.H. – Colby-Sawyer used victories at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, and No. 3 through No. 5 singles, to pick up an important 5-4 The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) women's tennis victory over Western New England College on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 6). 

The win improves the Chargers' record to 11-3 overall, 7-2 in conference play, while WNEC falls to 7-4 overall, 5-3 in conference play.

Western New England College senior captain Meredith Hughes (Springfield, MA) and sophomore Kristen Ayers (Acton, MA) both won their No. 1 and No. 2 singles, matches, respectively, while senior Aimee Schapp (Torrington, CT) captured her No. 6 singles match.

Hughes' match was a thriller as she rallied to defeat Mary Francis (Steuben, ME), 5-7, 7-6 (7-5), 1-0 (10-4). She and junior Ashley Sunderland (Commack, NY) dropped a close 9-7 decision at the No. 1 doubles flight.

Schapp and junior Nicole Freed (Jersey Shore, PA) won their No. 3 doubles match.
