Junior Matt Maynard leads Western New England College past Wesleyan

Box Score

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - Junior guard Matt Maynard (Paterson, NJ) scored 19 of his career high 30 points in the second half as the visiting Western New England College men's basketball team posted a 68-58 victory over Wesleyan University in the third-place game of The Inn at Middletown Tip-Off Tournament Saturday afternoon (Nov. 17) at Silloway Gym.

Maynard connected on 11-of-18 shots from the field (including 5-of-7 three-pointers) and made 3-of-4 free throws. He also contributed three rebounds, two steals, and pair of blocked shots in one of the finest performances of his career. Maynard also was selected to the All-Tournament Team.

Junior forward Kyle Fredette (Wallingford, VT) added a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Senior point guard Asif Abdul-Wadud (Springfield, MA) chipped-in with nine points (all from the charity stripe), five steals, and two assists while senior guard Ryan Hernandez (Hampton Bays, NY) also had nine points coming off the bench in his first appearance of the season.

Western New England College (1-1) trailed 31-30 at half-time and 46-42 with 11:26 left in the game before going on a 16-0 (12 points by Maynard) run to take a 58-46 lead following a foul shot by Fredette at the 5:17 mark.

Despite being out-rebounded (43-30), the Golden Bears played terrific defense limiting the Cardinals to only 33.9% shooting from the field and forcing 18 turnovers.

Senior forward Nick Pelletier (Amherst, NH) led Wesleyan (0-2) with 13 points and 12 rebounds while junior center Gabe Gonzalez-Kreisberg (Amherst, MA) had 11 points.

Western New England College played the contest without last year's leading scorer and ECAC Division III New England Tournament MVP Jim Bayne (Bristol, CT) who suffered a foot injury Friday night against Rhode Island College. The senior forward and team captain will be out of action indefinitely.
