FITCHBURG, Mass. - Stephen Schofield scored twice in the third period, including an empty net goal with 55 seconds remaining, as Fitchburg State defeated visiting Western New England College 3-1 in a non-league men's hockey contest Tuesday night (Nov. 6).

The Falcons, who were making their season debut, took a 1-0 lead in the opening period when Patrick Dolan netted a goal at the 16:45 mark.

The Golden Bears (0-3) tied the game on a goal by freshman Kyle Daly (Auburn, MA) at 6:14 of the second period. Sophomore Matt Haddock (Hilliard, OH) and junior David Smith (Columbus, IN) received assists.

Schofield then delivered the game-winner just 5:28 into the final period. Chris Riggs and John Goffredo assisted on both his goals in the final stanza.

WNEC junior Kyle Sagnella (East Haven, CT) again had a solid outing finishing with 26 saves. Devan McConnell stopped 23 shots for the hosts.

Western New England College and Fitchburg State each had nine penalties and both squads went 0-for-5 in power-play opportunities.
