DUDLEY, Mass. - Nichols College scored the last three goals of the game in defeating visiting Western New England College 8-3 in an ECAC Northeast men's hockey game Saturday night (Feb. 17).
The Golden Bears trailed 2-1 after the opening period and fell behind twice by three goals in the middle stanza before freshman forward Matt Haddock (Hillard, OH) cut the margin to 5-3 with his eighth goal of the season at the 14:24 mark. Sophomore forwards Phil Lamy (Manchester, NH) and Hank Levin (Lido Beach, NY) had the assists.
Anthony Monte of Nichols, however, was the difference in the game. He tallied his third goal just 51 seconds after Haddock's shot, then added a short-handed score for his fourth goal at 4:55 of the third period to give the hosts a comfortable 7-3 advantage.
Levin put Western New England College on the board with his seventh goal of the year at 17:30 of the first period with assists from Lamy and junior defenseman Pat Tamez (Mt. Laurel, NJ). Sophomore defenseman Joe Balog (Ludlow, MA) fired home an unassisted power play goal for his eighth score of the season at 11:04 of the second period to get the Golden Bears within 4-2. Junior goalie Brandon Gervais (Lewiston, ME) finished with 37 saves.
Western New England College falls to 8-14 and 2-12 in the conference entering its final game of the season at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday (Feb. 20) against Plymouth State University at the Olympia Ice Center in West Springfield.
Nichols improves its record to 13-9-2 and 8-5-1 in the league.
