Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass. â€" Junior guard Tiffany DeRosa (Hamden, CT) tallied a game high 17 points and senior forward Sharon Simoncelli (Litchfield, CT) added 14 points and six rebounds as the Western New England College women’s basketball team ran its winning streak to four games with a 68-38 victory over visiting Rivier College Saturday (Feb. 3) in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) contest.
The Golden Bears are now 9-10 overall and 5-2 in the conference.
DeRosa was the catalyst scoring 15 of her points in the opening half as WNEC overcame an early 11-2 deficit to take a 37-27 lead at the break. She made 8-of-12 shots from the field, pulled down four rebounds, and dished out three assists.
Senior guard Jenna Cullen (East Haddam, CT) again provided a big lift coming off the bench with nine points and four assists in 16 minutes. Junior guard Jen Dabrowski (Plainville, MA) also had nine points and four assists.
The Western New England College defense allowed the Raiders only 11 points in the second stanza and forced 28 turnovers.
Sophomore forward Peggy Dalton (Amherst, MA) led Rivier (13-7, 3-4 GNAC) with 10 points and seven rebounds while freshman forward Jess Mellen (Rockland, MA) had a game high 13 rebounds.
Before the game the Western New England College players and coaching staff participated in clincis as part of the annual Girls and Women in Sports Day celebration.
