SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Sophomore Laura Bower (Hudson, MA) fired a five-inning no-hitter as the Western New England College softball team posted a 9-0 victory over visiting Albertus Magnus College Friday afternoon (April 20) in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) game. The Golden Bears completed the sweep over the Falcons by winning the second contest by the score of 3-2.
Bower (11-5) struck out 12 of the 16 batters she faced while giving up one walk.
Freshman second base player Kate Post (Bridgewater, MA) was 2-for-3 with two runs and two walks. Sophomore left fielder Toni Hand (Londonderry, NH) also went 2-for-3 with a run and RBI.
Freshman right fielder Lauren Arsenault (Fitchburg, MA) had two hits in four at-bats with a run and RBI. Junior designated player Steph Ganser (Fairfield, CT) walked, was hit by a pitch, singled, and scored three times.
In the second game, the Golden Bears scored all their runs in the second with Ganser's two-run double with two outs the big hit of the inning. She also had a pair of singles in her other two at-bats.
Freshman Vic Lospinuso (West Islip, NY) picked up the win in relief while Bower pitched a scoreless seventh for the save.
Western New England College raises its record to 22-10 overall and 15-3 in the conference.
Albertus Magnus College falls to 4-14 and 1-13.
