EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior second base player Stephanie Ganser (Fairfield, CT) had a pair of doubles along with three RBI as the Western New England College softball team rallied for a 7-4 win over host Johnson & Wales University in the second game of a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader Sunday (April 22) at Pierce Field.
JWU took the opener 1-0 behind a no-hitter by senior Allison Winslow (Milford, NH) who fanned three while giving up three walks. The Wildcats scored their only run in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by senior Amandra Lothrop (Bridgewater, MA). Sophomore Laura Bower (Hudson, MA) was the hard-luck losing pitcher allowing only six hits while striking out 11 with no walks.
The Golden Bears bounced back from a 3-0 deficit in the second game by scoring five times in the fifth with Ganser's two-run double the big hit. She also had a RBI double in the seventh when the team tacked on a pair of insurance runs. Junior third base player Meredith Pacelli (Hamden, CT) also had two hits in the game while senior designated player Jes Nelson (South Hadley, MA) had a single, sacrifice fly, and two RBI.
Sophomore Brittany DeGennaro (Orange, CT) gained the win in relief after giving up only one run and four hits with four strikeouts in three-and-a-third innings. She now has a 6-2 mark.
Western New England College has a 23-11 record, including a 16-4 mark in the conference. The Golden Bears conclude their league campaign with a home doubleheader against Daniel Webster College starting at 3:00 p.m. on Monday (April 23).
The Wildcats are 9-22 overall and 6-14 in the GNAC.
