Western New England College drops doubleheader to city rival Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Freshman pitcher Courtney Kapinos (South Hadley, MA) had her first complete game victory as Springfield College held on for a 5-4 victory over host Western New England College in the second game of a non-league doubleheader Monday (April 30). The Pride also took the opener by the score of 9-3.

Kapinos (3-1) retired the final out after the Golden Bears scored three times in the seventh and had the tying and winning runs on second and third.

Freshman catcher Michelle Wlosek (Nutley, NJ) slugged a three-run homer in the sixth while sophomore designated player Danielle Spiro (South Windsor, CT) had two hits and two RBI, including what proved to be the game-winning RBI single in the top of the seventh.

The Golden Bears had 10 hits, including two singles by junior third base player Meredith Pacelli (Hamden, CT) who also had a RBI. Junior designated player Steph Ganser (Fairfield, CT) had a two-run single in the seventh.

In the opener, Western New England College hit three home runs to account for its runs, including a pair by Pacelli in her first two at-bats. Sophomore shortstop Brittany DeGennaro (Orange, CT) followed Pacelli's second blast for back-to-back round trippers in the fourth.

Freshman right fielder Bryn Worrilow (North Babylon, NY) scored two runs and reached base all four times for the Pride with a three-run double in the first, two singles, and a walk. Spiro also had two hits, including a two-run single in the fourth.

Springfield, which was playing perhaps its final games of the season, improves its record to 25-14 while Western New England College falls to 27-15. The Golden Bears visit Williams in a twin bill Tuesday (May 1).

Both teams may be invited to the ECAC Division III New England Tournament.
