BRISTOL, R.I. - Fifth-seeded Western New England College remains alive in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New England Softball Championship after blanking top-seeded Roger Williams 5-1 in a morning game before dropping a 3-0 decision to second-seeded Western Connecticut State University in a late afternoon battle Saturday (May 12).
Sophomore Laura Bower (Hudson, MA) gained her 17th victory of the season in the opener allowing eight hits while striking out seven and walking four.
Freshman right fielder Christina Farese (Marlborough, MA) had a pair of doubles and three RBI to lead the nine-hit attack. Junior designated player Steph Ganser (Fairfield, CT) added a single and double. Sophomore shortstop Brittany DeGennaro (Orange, CT) had a single and scored two runs. Freshman second base player Kate Post (Bridgewater, MA) contributed a single with two runs, and a RBI.
Western Connecticut pitcher Shelby Slie tossed a three-hitter in the second contest as the Colonials took advantage of three WNEC errors to score all of their runs in the thid inning.
Western New England College (30-178 meets sixth-seeded Brandeis at 10:00 a.m. Sunday (May 13) in an eliminatuion game. The winner faces WCSU in the championship round at noon.
