BRISTOL, R.I. - The Western New England College softball team completed another successful season by placing second at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Diviison III New England Championship on Sunday (May 13).
The fifth-seeded Golden Bears defeated sixth-seeded Brandeis 8-2 in an elinination contest in a morning game, then dropped a 7-1 decision to second-seeded Western COnnecticut in the championship game.
Senior first base player Jes Nelson (South Hadley, MA) had a two-run homer and junior designated player Steph Ganser (Fairfield, CT) added a RBI double in the opening game. Sophomore pitcher Laura Bower (Hudson, MA) picked up her 18th win of the season.
In the second game, freshman right fielder Christina Farese (Marlborough, MA) had a run-scoring single for the Golden Bears.
WCSU sophomore Loren Angiolillo went 4-for-4 while junior pitcher Shelby Slie struck out four in earning the tournament Most Outstanding Player award.
Western New England College finishes with a 31-18 record; Western Connecticut ends with a 28-13 mark.
