SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Keeping the momentum going from the previous evening, the Western New England College women's volleyball team again won two matches to take top honors at its own WNEC Invitational Saturday afternoon (Sept. 1) at the Alumni Healthful Living Center.
Coach Charlie Haer's squad defeated Keene State (30-27, 30-23, 23-30, 30-27) and Western Connecticut (18-30, 31-29, 30-21, 30-20) by identical 3-1 scores to finish the two-day tournament with a perfect 4-0 record.
Freshman setter Katharina Boes (Buffalo Grove, IL) was the Tournament MVP after compiling 74 assists (44 vs. Keene State) and 21 digs (13 vs. Western Connecticut) in the two matches.
Senior outside hitter Ashley O'Keefe (South Dennis, MA) gained a spot on the All-Tournament Team with a pair of double-doubles against Keene State (19 digs, 14 kills) and Western (13 digs, 13 kills). She also had nine blocks (6 vs. Keene) in the two matches.
Sophomore outside hitter Rachel Cervone (West Springfield, MA) also had a big afternoon with 33 digs (17 vs. Keene State) while freshman outside hitter Samantha Shomo (Glen Gardner, NJ) added a double-double against Western (16 digs, 13 kills). Senior right side hitter Kayte Devine (New Fairfield, CT) contributed 16 kills and eight digs against Keene.
