Strong start lifts Western New England College over Curry in TCCC opener

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Senior guard Jen Dabrowski (Plainville, CT) scored a game-high 17 points as Western New England College defeated visiting Curry College 53-41 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) women's basketball opener for both teams Saturday afternoon (Jan. 12) at the Alumni Healthful Living Center.

Dabrowski also pulled down a team high seven rebounds and had four assists along with two blocks and two steals.

Freshman guard Lauren Stock (Rocky Hill, CT) contributed 12 points with four assists and four steals.

The Golden Bears (5-6) started strong making 11 of their first 14 field goals to take a 24-9 advantage 8:53 into the opening half. Sophomore forward Kaylyn Smith (Rensselaer, NY) came off the bench to score six of her seven points in a 1:44 span, including a lay-up that gave the hosts the 15-point lead.

Western New England College led 37-23 at halftime and held a double-digit lead the rest of the away although Curry (5-8) twice pulled within 10 at 49-39 with 6:36 left and 51-41 at the 5:52 mark.

The Colonels, however, didn't score a point the rest of the contest while WNEC managed only two.

Freshman forward Cortney Robinson (Brockton, MA) had a double-double for the visitors with 11 points and 13 rebounds with a pair of blocks and steals. Junior forward Christina Sancinito (Wakefield, MA) added seven points and five rebounds.

Western New England College, which broke a two-game losing streak, finished shooting 40.0% from the field while Curry had a tough afternoon making only 27.7% of its field goal attempts. The Colonels held a slim 44-41 advantage off the boards.
