WINCHENDON, Mass. – Senior forward Shawn Longley (Raymond, ME) netted the game-winner with his first goal of the season 2:29 into overtime to lead the Western New England College men's hockey team to a hard-fought 3-2 decision over host Franklin Pierce in an ECAC Northeast game Wednesday night (Jan. 16) at the Winchenden School Ice Rink.
This was the second straight win for the Golden Bears who improved their record to 2-12-1 overall and 1-5-1 in the conference.
After a scoreless opening period, Western New England College took a 1-0 lead when junior forward Dean Smith (Warwick, RI) tallied his first goal of the year on a power play at 12:50 of the second period. Longley and sophomore defenseman Joe Trimboli (Las Vegas, NV) earned the assists.
Senior Ryan Strayer (Murfreesboro, TN) tied the game just 2:04 later on a Ravens' power play.
Junior forward Jason Remsbecker (Farmingdale, NY) put the Golden Bears ahead again with a short-handed score (his first of the season) at the 2:46 mark of the third period. The assists went to senior left wing Nick Sampson (Reading, MA) and senior defenseman Nick Klassen (Parker, CO).
Franklin Pierce (4-12, 2-8 ECAC Northeast) against knotted the contest when junior Jay Stempniak (West Seneca, NY) scored at the 11:03 mark.
Each team was skating a man-down in the extra session when Longley ended things with his goal, which was assisted by junior defenseman Chris Gillman (Wingdale, NY).
Freshman goalie Justin Richards (Somers, CT) finished with 21 saves in his second college start while freshman Jeremy Rossignolo (Rochester, NY) stopped 14 shots for the Ravens.
