AWestern New England College rallies to tie Fitchburg State in ECAC Northeast action

Box Score

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Freshman forward Kyle Daly (Auburn, MA) scored the equalizer with 13.4 seconds remaining regulation as the Western New England College men's hockey team skated to a 3-3 overtime tie with visiting Fitchburg State in an ECAC Northeast contest Saturday afternoon (Jan. 26) at Smead Arena.

The Golden Bears, who are 4-0-1 in their last five starts, improved to 4-12-2 overall and 2-5-2 in the conference. The Falcons, who had won their last three contests, are now 9-6-3 overall and 5-2-2 in the league.

After a scoreless opening period, Fitchburg State took a quick 2-0 lead in the opening two minutes of the middle stanza on goals by junior forward Matt Arsenault (Gardner, MA) (his 14th of the season) at 29 seconds and freshman forward Andrew Jones (Franklin, MA) just 1:24 later.

WNEC came back to knot the hard-hitting game when junior defenseman Joe Balog (Ludlow, MA) tallied his fourth goal of the season at the 3:07 mark. Freshman forward Vinny Weyel (North Haven, CT) added his third of the season at 11:17.

The visitors took the lead in the locker room when junior defenseman Aaron Kiernan (Anchorage, AK) scored his first goal of the season at 17:54.

Western New England College finally broke through once again when Daly was able to slip the puck past senior goalie Devan McConnell (Lake Stevens, WA) in the final seconds. McConnell finished with 17 saves, including seven nice stops in the final stanza.

Richards, who had an assist on Weyel's goal for his first collegiate point, stopped 11 shots to raise his record to 4-0-1.

Fitchburg had defeated Western New England College 3-1 last November 6.
