NEWPORT, R.I. - The sixth-seeded Western New England College women's tennis team upset third-seeded Salve Regina 5-4 in a quarterfinal round match of The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) Tournament Tuesday afternoon (Oct. 14).
The victory avenged not only a 6-3 home loss to the Seahawks during the regular season, but also a 5-4 decision to SRU during the opening round of last year's league tournament in Springfield.
WNEC will meet second-seeded Endicott (a 9-0 winner over seventh-seeded Gordon) at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday (Oct. 22) in Beverly, Massachusetts.
Senior captain Nicole Freed (Jersey Shore, PA) led the Golden Bears by winning her No. 4 singles match with a exciting 6-4, 6-4 decision over senior Jessica Smith (Bristol, CT).
Freed teamed with freshman Jessica Haffner (Suffield, CT) for an 8-6 win over sophomore Elise Jones (Pittsfield, MA) and Smith at the No. 2 doubles flight.
Junior Kelly Murnane (Cheshire, CT) also played a key role by posting wins at both No. 5 singles and No. 3 doubles with sophomore Ashley Czelatka (Southampton, NY).
Freshman Christina Barbarisi (Feeding Hills, MA) continued her outstanding play with a big win at No. 6 singles.
